HVAC licensing is set state by state and sometimes city by city, which means the same certificate can shorten your route to a licence by two years in one state and count for nothing across the border. Each page below covers that state's own rules, read from its board or statute rather than from a summary, alongside its accredited programs and its pay.

What kind of school teaches HVAC
The kind of school that teaches HVAC is not what most people expect. A large share of accredited HVAC training in this country happens in high school career centers and union apprenticeships rather than in colleges, which is why this site ranks them all together instead of publishing a college list and calling it the field.
Of the 138 programs, 48 name EPA Section 608 preparation on their own page, 28 name an apprenticeship, co-op or internship you can earn through, and 7 hold accreditation from both HVAC Excellence and PAHRA rather than one. Those three facts move a program up the ranking more than anything else does.
Method
What the HVAC program score weighs
The HVAC program score weighs one hundred points across five factors, all of them read from public records or from the school's own published program page. Nothing here is a survey, a reputation score or a paid placement, and no school can move up by asking.
Independent review
40Programmatic accreditation is voluntary in HVAC/R, so holding any of it is a decision to be audited against an industry standard. Holding both HVAC Excellence and PAHRA means passing two separate reviews with different criteria.
Refrigerant certification
20EPA Section 608 is required by federal law to handle refrigerant, so it is the gate between training and paid work. This point is earned when the school names 608 preparation on its own program page.
Industry credentials
15Credentials employers ask for beyond the federal minimum: NATE, R-410A handling, OSHA cards, or an explicit route to a state licence or contractor exam.
Earn while training
15A registered apprenticeship, co-op or internship named on the page. For a reader who cannot stop working, this matters more than anything else on this list, and it is the factor that most often favours a training center over a college.

Where our data comes from
Accreditation comes from the HVAC Excellence and PAHRA directories. Wages come from the May 2025 BLS OEWS release. Program records come from federal IPEDS filings. Licensing rules are read from each state's own board, statute or municipal code, and every state page carries the date that research was verified.
118 of the 151 accredited schools have either a federal record or information taken from the school's own program page. Where a figure is not published, we leave it out rather than estimate it.
